What is Ecotourism?
Did you know tourism is responsible for about 8% of the world’s carbon emissions? We are destroying our planet by creating more waste, more crowding and more energy consumption. So what can we do? Ecotourism is responsible travel to natural areas that conserve the environment, sustains the well being of local people and involves interpretation and education.
Here are few ways you can implement ecotourism into your next trip:
1. We can reduce our negative impact on the environment by traveling to natural areas that can conserve the environment such as national parks, rainforests, conservations, and nature preserves.
2. You can go camping, stay in an ecolodge or even a sustainable hotel.
3. Make sure to always respect the local people and culture. You can do this by educating yourself on the destination’s history and culture. Try immersing yourself in the culture by meeting local people, trying local cuisine, exploring their art and even museums.
4. Try to keep your spending local when you travel! You can do this by booking tours or excursions through the locals, and shop and dine at local businesses.
5. Never litter! Use a reusable water bottle when you travel and carry a bag. Always leave a place the way it was or even better.
